Global Warming is Coming

Hong Kong Climate Student ProtestsRecently young activists walked out of schools and some of them spoke at the United Nations to raise awareness of the imminent dangers of climate change. While we admire their passion, we believe that there is insufficient evidence to establish that there is a significant change in the climate, and furthermore that even if the change observed in recent years were significant, there is insufficient evidence to establish causation. Many physical processes of the earth, the sun, and the oceans operate on cycles of hundreds of years. Therefore, man has not accumulated sufficient data in his 150 or so years of observation to characterize the underlying cycles and trends and to establish a reliable baseline for framing a proper null hypothesis.

Polar Bear 2Furthermore, the earth, and specifically the oceans, are so vast that it is the height of arrogance to presuppose that mankind could alter its course on a global scale. The fact that warming may have occurred over the period of observation, coinciding with industrialization is to embrace the fallacy that correlation proves causation. Climate alarmists also neglect the inherent non-linearity of most physical-chemical processes. Chemical kinetics suggest that increases in CO2 and temperature should result in increases in photosynthesis which we could expect to mitigate the effects of increased CO2 to some degree. Furthermore, climate alarmists cherry pick the baseline for their analyses, to increase the appearance of adverse effects. This statistical fraud is discussed brilliantly by Tony Heller on You Tube:

OK, so I’m a “climate-denier”. It’s true. The Bible tells us in Psalm 119:90b “You (i.e. God) established the earth and it stands.” Since I embrace a Biblical worldview, it seems unlikely to me that mankind will single-handedly destroy what God has created. (That is not to say that we are not to be good stewards, which is another matter.) Nevertheless, to say that mankind can or will destroy the earth is to echo the declaration “I will be like the Most High!” That will not end well. On the other hand, I do believe that global warming is coming, not in the way the climate alarmists anticipate, but the Bible tells us that the earth is to be destroyed by fire. 2 Peter 3 is the reference for this belief. In this text Peter warns us of the signs of the last days, the eventual destruction of the heavens and earth as we know them and warns those who follow Christ not to be persuaded by the errors of men.

Signs of the Last Days

Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.” For when they maintain this, it escapes their notice that by the word of God the heavens existed long ago and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world at that time was destroyed, being flooded with water. But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:3-9)

Destruction by Heat

destruction by fireBut the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up. Since all these things are to be destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be destroyed by burning, and the elements will melt with intense heat! (2 Peter 3:10-12)

A New Heaven and Earth

But according to His promise we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells. Therefore, beloved, since you look for these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, spotless and blameless, and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation; just as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given him, wrote to you, as also in all his letters, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which the untaught and unstable distort, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction. You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. (2 Peter 3:13-18)

new heaven and earth

Prepare for the Last Days

So, global warming, aka man-made climate change, is not supported by the evidence, but the word of God, who created the heavens and earth, has revealed that the heavens and earth will be destroyed one day by intense heat to make way for a new heaven and earth, in which righteousness dwells. You may say to yourself: “So how do I get a piece of that?” While Peter acknowledges that some things are hard to understand, God has made it easy for us to restore the relationship with Him that was broken by the Fall. By His grace he has provided the way for us. The Bible teaches:

  • All of us have sinned. (Romans 3:23)
  • Sin separates us from a holy God, resulting in (eternal) death. (Romans 6:23)red Cross
  • But God loves us, and while we were yet sinners, provided His Son, Jesus Christ, to die the death we deserved. (Romans 5:1)
  • God offers deliverance from our sins as a free gift. All we have to do is accept it. (Ephesians 2:8-9)
  • When we accept by faith in God the free gift of salvation offered through Jesus, we have peace with God, which allows us to enter into a relationship with Him. (Romans 5:8)
  • When we hear God’s word and believe him, we are removed forever from judgement and pass from the death we deserve into eternal life. (John 5:24)

The Last Days may be centuries away, or they may be next week. No one but the Father knows. Nevertheless, if you have not accepted the free gift of salvation offered by God, today would be a good day. Repent (turn from your sin). Accept the gift Jesus offers, by faith. Begin growing in the grace and knowledge of Jesus. Avoid foolish arguments and the error of unprincipled men (e.g. climate change.)
