Bias on the Right

In our last post we examined the Leftward bias of the mainstream media. In most of the cases we exposed them with their own reporting. Nevertheless, it would be misleading for us to report the bias on the Left and not to discuss the bias on the Right also. Whenever the citizens or their press ceases to self-govern and tolerates incomplete or inaccurate reporting, it is an existential threat to Liberty. It is not OK for “our guys” to match the tactics of the Left with the same tactics. Here are two examples of shameful misinformation on the “right”.

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.” (Proverbs 12:22)

Fair and Balanced

Fox News ChannelFox News sell itself as “Fair and Balanced”, but having watched Fox News for many years, it is clear that they have their favorites. This was particularly evident during the 2016 presidential campaign when it became clear to me that Fox News had become the Donald Trump channel. This is nowhere clearer today than in the fawning coverage Sean Hannity gives to the Trump Administration.

In his new book, Truth Bombs, Steve Deace provides an excellent analysis of a 2014 event that demonstrates the bias of Fox News. In 2014, Matt Bevin, a proven conservative, ran in the Republican primary against Senator Mitch McConnell. Bevin was a popular candidate, and this should have been a competitive race. In addition, McConnell has a long history of betraying conservative causes, so Bevin might have benefited from some “fair and balanced” coverage. Deace typed “Bevin McConnell 2014” into the Fox News site and got zero results – zip, zilch, nada. Deace repeated this search on MSNC and obtained 85 results. (Deace 2019) I have reperformed this analysis and validated Deace’s results. A similar search of CNN turned up 25 results. Why is that?

Deace explains. In 2014 Erick Erickson was covering the Bevin-McConnell race and was criticizing McConnell. According to Erickson, Elaine Chao, McConnell’s wife, went to Roger Ailes complaining that Erickson was a problem. In response to Chao, Ailes took Erickson off of Fox News, effectively silencing their coverage of Matt Bevin. As a result, many Kentucky voters went to the primary poll unaware of Bevin and the alternative he offered to Mitch McConnell. (Deace 2019) Bevin lost the primary to McConnell, but was later elected governor of Kentucky.

“He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool.” (Proverbs 10:18)

Fox News is the voice of the Republican Establishment and of late the Trump Administration, which lately seems to be indistinguishable from the aforementioned Establishment. Their balance is usually provided by hapless Democrats who have difficulty making a coherent argument. Admittedly, Fox News has given a platform recently to Mark Levin, who in the past has been an outspoken critic of the president, on policies on which he disagrees. One wonders if the program will continue through the 2020 election cycle is Levin continues to criticize President Trump, Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy and other GOP “leaders”.

The Republican Party Claims to be Pro-Life

“Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)

NY Legislature Celebration
(Blair 2019)

A few weeks ago, we were treated to the spectacle of New York legislators celebrating the legalization of the killing of babies right up to the moment of birth. The Democrats in Virginia tried to follow suit. Their efforts failed but generated some more great click bait. Republicans across the board emerged to intone that the GOP is the Pro-Life party. And indeed, the GOP national platform seems to support that claim, stating:

Accordingly, we assert the sanctity of human life and affirm that the unborn child has a fundamental right to life which cannot be infringed.” (The Republican Party 2016)

But are their actions consistent with their words?

Since publishing that platform at their 2016 National Convention, the GOP has held a majority in the House of Representatives, a majority in the Senate, and the Presidency for two years. Despite controlling the Legislative and Executive Branches, the GOP failed to repeal Roe vs. Wade. They were unable to even end funding for Planned Parenthood, which reported it conducted 332,757 abortion services in its 2017-2018 Annual Report. (Planned Parenthood 2018) Planned Parenthood reports that it receives 34% of its revenue from “Government Health Services & Grants”. which is approximately $564 million. (Planned Parenthood 2018)

GOP LogoClearly, government funding represents a large proportion of Planned Parenthood’s funding. In fact, it is the largest single source of funding for PP. But what have the Republicans done to stop funding a group that is arguably, our country’s chief baby killer? Nothing. They passed every budget bill or continuing resolution with which they were presented. For instance, in March 2018, GOP majorities passed the massive 1.3 trillion Omnibus bill. In May 2017 these chambers passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill. Both of these funded Democrat priorities including PP. In September 2016, on the eve of winning a majority, GOP Senators supported a bill that funded numerous Obama priorities and gave Planned Parenthood a raise. GOP Senators voting for this bill included “conservatives” Cornyn, Cotton, Ernst, Hatch, McCain, McConnell and Rubio. There are exceptions, however. Senator Ted Cruz voted against all 3 of these massive spending bills. (Conservative Review 2019)When the 2016 vote was taken the ink was barely dry on the 2016 GOP Platform.

The truth is the GOP leadership has no particular problem with killing babies and funding the killing with your tax dollars. They really don’t like you pro-life people very much and think you are what prevents them from winning elections. In Truth Bombs Steve Deace states that Lie #3 is “Republicans are the Pro-Life Party.” He goes on to say:

Truth BombsAs of the time I’m writing this book, majority Republicans in Congress are fully funding Planned Parenthood, an organization founded by a vehement racist that is personally responsible for the deaths of at least seven million children and has been caught on camera ghoulishly peddling dead baby parts for profit. And yet, during the past twenty years when Republicans have been in control of Congress, they have heinously and inexcusably doubled Planned Parenthood’s taxpayer funding. While I was writing this very chapter, Republicans handed Planned Parenthood, the most prolific child executioner in American history, five hundred million dollars more of our money.” (Deace 2019)

The recent “bipartisan” spending bill passed by both houses, with Republican votes, and cheerfully signed by President Trump, continues the funding of baby killing with YOUR tax dollars. Don’t count on either the mainstream media, Fox News, or other “conservative” outlets to call your attention to this.

Those that kill human beings uniquely created in the image of God, are not worthy of your support – ever. A politician who does not protect your right to life, will not have the courage to protect your other rights.

On the other hand I am filled with power— With the Spirit of the Lord— And with justice and courage To make known to Jacob his rebellious act, Even to Israel his sin. (Micah 3:8)_

God will not ignore the outcry from the souls of murdered babies forever. There will be a reckoning.

In our next post, we will continue our discussion of the civil society and the threats to our God-given rights posed by the inability of a nations’ citizens to control themselves.
